  • Steve Mason announced the starter for the Blue Jackets.  The 21 year old Rookie of the Year comes into tonights matchup 8-5-2 with a 3.48 GAA and .884 SV% in 15 games.  The Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline has the full report.

  • Semyon Varlamov confirmed here and here. The young Russian netminder is 8-1 in 10 games with a 2.59 GAA and .911 SV%.  Last night’s starter Michael Neuvirth returned to Hershey this morning.
  • His counterpart will be Vesa Toskala, writes Jonas Siegel.  Toskala boasts a 0-4-2 line with a 4.26 GAA an .854 SV% in eight games.
  • Radio announcer Dan Kamal confirms Marc Andre Fleury facing Johan Hedberg.  The Atlanta backups is 4-1-0 with a 2.63 GAA an .923 SV% in seven games while Fleury is 11-7-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .899 SV% in 18 games.
  • Tom Gulitti’s Fire & Ice reports backup Yann Danis will make his third star of the year.  In his two previous starts, Danis has a 1.00 GAA and .964 SV%.

  • John Vogl’s Sabres Edge lists Patrick Lalime as likely for the Sabres.  The backup is winless in two games with a 4.14 GAA an .854 SV% in two games.

  • Jose Theodore returned to Washington for personal matter, meaning Semyon Varlamov will start tonight for the Rangers.  Theodore expected only to miss one game, however Michael Neuvirth has been recalled from Hershey to backup VarlamovVarlamov is 7 – 1 with a 2.67 GAA and .912 SV% on the year.  Tarik El-Bashir of the Washington Post covers the full story.
  • Michael Leighton confirmed by coach Paul Maurice, Chip Alexander’s Canes Now writes.  With Sunday’s win over the Wild, Leighton is now 1-2 with a 4.67 GAA and .833 SV%.

  • Carey Price makes another start for the Canadiens.  Coming off a 53-save effort Saturday, Price is now 4-8 with a .904 SV% and 3.08 GAA.  Pat Hickey of Habs Inside/Out confirms.

  • Montreal’s starter is a “toss-up” as is Toronto’s.

  • The Phoenix Coyotes Official Site lists Ilya Bryzgalov as expected against his former team the Ducks.  Likewise, expect Jonas Hiller to suit up against the Yotes.  Jean-Sebastien Giguere is still nursing a sore groin, as reported in the LATimes.  In the meantime, Justin Pogge will remain Hiller‘s backup.

Somehow my excerpt was deleted or not posted, thanks Steve (Rangersfan527@yahoo.com) for the tip.  Josh Harding is listed day-to-day here, leaving the only option rookie Anton Khudobin who Michael Russo mentions in the post will probably backup Backstrom his entire stay.

  • Tim Thomas is expected back in net when the Bruins take on the Colorado Avalanche.  Fluto Shinzawa has the projected lineup here.
  • Henrik Lundqvist will give superstar Steve Valiquette the night off after his 3 – 0 shutout against the Ducks.  In all seriousness, Lundqvist will start the next two games according to Rick Carpiniello of Rangers Report.  Click here for the full article.
  • Miikka Kiprusoff prepares for a playoff rematch against the Chicago Blackhawks.  Read the entire article here.
  • Tomas Vokoun to start tonight against the Lightning even with Scott Clemmensen back with the team according to this George Richards entry.  As a result, Alexander Salak was sent down to Rochester.
  • Evgeni Nabokov will get the nod against Phoenix.  Read a feature here on his last game.
  • John Glennon the Nashville beat writer states Pekka Rinne will face the Edmonton Oilers.  He goes into detail regarding the goalie shift, posting their schedule here.

  • Here is quote from a few days back addressing the starter controversy or lack there of in Chicago:
“Now, before Hawks fans start calling for Niemi to be the starter over Cristobal Huet, know that is not going to happen unless the veteran just doesn’t find his game at any point this season.”
It clearly looks like Huet is the starter and it will be specified with Niemi will get a look.  Click here for the full post.

  • According to this preview here, Jeff Deslaurier will make his first start of the year for Nikolai Khabibulin.

  • The AP implies here that Evgeni Nabokov duels with Niklas Backstrom tonight.

  • Interesting to see if Pete DeBoer goes with Tomas Vokoun as originally planned.  As noted here, Scott Clemmensen is still not back with his team, “needs about a week of practice before he is ready.”  Alexander Salak meanwhile remains Vokoun’s backup.  Vokoun is written about again hereMartin Brodeur as always is expected to start for the Devils.
  • Marc Andre Fleury is projected to start against the Leafs, according to this preview.   Jonas Gustavsson was placed on IR Thursday according to the same article.  Vesa Toskala starts with Joey MacDonald his backup tonight.
  • Chris Osgood has been discussed at length here.  It is safe to say he will be in the lineup after his solid performance against Chicago.  Still no word on the Washington starter.
  • Tuuka Rask may get his first start tonight, as discussed by Bruins Blog’s Fluto Shinzawa here.  The same is confirmed on the Isles’ site here.  Still no word on the starter for the Isles, will keep you updated.

  • Ilya Bryzgalov will start tonight against Columbus, confirmed here Mathieu Garon may get his first start of the year, as stated here.
  • Chris Mason is expected to bounce back from his last performance against Los Angeles.  The severity of his sluggishness is discussed here. The same article mentions  Jon Quick as the projected starter against St. Louis.
  • Craig Anderson looks to continue his hot start against the Blackhawks.  You can read all about it here.

  • Nashville Predators beat writer John Glennon writes here that Pekka Rinne will make his season debut tonight.
  • Damian Cristodero announced here that Antero Niittymaki will start tonight for Tampa Bay.  Mike Smith is still recovering from his collision with Jamie Langenbrunner.
  • I posted this link yesterday, but it doesn’t hurt to reiterate.

“We’d like to get Mike (Leighton) in a game, there’s no question about that,” Maurice said. “The schedule does not show of lot of urgency not to play Cam back to back. We have days off.”

Sounds like Cam Ward should get the start tonight
