Restoring the Rosters: Chicago Blackhawks

12/09/2009
Chicago Blackhawks v Columbus Blue Jackets

Matthew Pouliot’s series on Circling the Bases, I have decided restore the rosters for every NHL team. Like Pouliot, I have established some ground rules for my selections.

  1. Each team contains players they originally drafted or signed before any other NHL team. This includes players drafted and not signed, as well as European free agents coming over at an older age.
  2. I have chosen to leave retired players off the list, and lean toward players in the AHL rather than those deported (KHL, SEL, DEL, etc.).

Essentially I am choosing the best available players for a team to succeed in the current NHL season. All 30 teams will be covered, with grades assigned to forwards, defense and goaltending. After all 30 articles are written, they will be ranked in order. This series’ intent is to reward or shame NHL scouts.

Due to excellent drafting over the last couple of years, the Blackhawks have restocked the cupboard nicely.  The core established on their current roster is mostly homegrown with players with free agent signings filling out a few spots.  Both their forwards and defensive units feature high end talent as well as solid depth.

The lineup for the Chicago Blackhawks is as follows.

Daily Fantasy 3 Stars 11/30/2009

12/01/2009
Washington Capitals v Philadelphia Flyers

In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO)

THIRD STAR: Eric Fehr, Washington Capitals (0-0-1) – Semin out, Ovechkin out? No problem, says Fehr.  The 24-year-old now has six points in his last four games.  Last night he added a goal and an assist as his Capitals defeated the Hurricanes 3-2.  The right wing put two shots on net, posted four penalty minutes and finished the evening a plus one making him a solid contributor across five offensive categories.  He should be on your radar now, keep him there, this kid has legitimate power forward potential and could be a huge post-hype sleeper.

SECOND STAR: Curtis Glencross, Calgary Flames (0-1-0) – After being held scoreless in his last two games, the 26-year-old broke out in a big way.  The left wing scored a goal and assisted in two more as the Flames routed the Predators 5-0.  In addition, his goal came shorthanded and one of his assists came on the powerplay making him a special teams force. The former Oiler added three shots on goal and a plus one to his line giving him solid contributions across five categories. Glencross now has 13 points in 23 games, putting him in line to post career highs for the second year in a row.

Restoring the Rosters: Calgary Flames

11/21/2009
Calgary Flames v Toronto Maple Leafs

Based on Matthew Pouliot’s series on Circling the Bases, I have decided restore the rosters for every NHL team.

After all 30 articles are written, they will be ranked in order. This series’ intent is to reward or shame NHL scouts.

This Flames team features a legitimate NHL player in every slot, not something I can say for every team.  Their strength seems to be in drafting and developing solid grinding type forwards and defensemen.  The roster lacks star power but makes up for it with solid depth.

The lineup for the Calgary Flames is as follows.
