Daily Fantasy 3 Stars 01/09/2010

01/10/2010
Pittsburgh Penguins v Philadelphia Flyers

In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO) and thus exclude player’s salaries.

Big, big night in hockey with 13 games and 26 teams in action.  We witnessed a blow out and even a laser pointer fiasco out west.  Cheap plug but our goalie starters went 26/26.  Here are our standout fantasy stars for January 9, 2010:

THIRD STAR:  Tom Poti, Washington Capitals (0-0-1) –Poti helped the Capitals make short work of their division rivals, with a 8-1 route of the Thrashers.  The 32-year-old veteran defenseman scored a powerplay goal and assisted on two more giving him three points on the evening.  In a little under 22 minutes of ice time he also fired three shots on net while finishing the game with a perfect plus-two rating.

NHLHS Endorsed Pickups

01/05/2010
Ryan Shannon of the Ottawa Senators in action. Click the picture for more NHLHS Endorsed Pickups!

NHLHS Endorsed Pickups is a weekly column where we discuss players worthy of your fantasy team.  We hold no responsibility over the outcome of your roster, however, if you view past articles you will find a pretty successful track record.  Any player written about is under 50 percent owned in Yahoo! leagues.

This week we will go over some promotions to the top lines and analyze the longevity of their value.  In addition, some players elevated their games following an Olympic selection, so there are a number of exciting topics to go over on this weeks edition of NHLHS Endorsed Pickups.

Here are today’s picks:

C: Erik Christensen, New York Rangers –  Would you believe me if I told you in August Erik Christensen would be the Rangers number one center?  The latest pivot for Marian Gaborik recently put together a modest 3 game point streak, putting in two goals and two assists.  A waiver flier from the Rangers earlier in the year seems to thrive in the offensive system of coach John Tortorella so as long as the kid stays healthy, he should be productive.  The 26-year-old showed past success playing in the Atlantic Division playing with the Penguins before leaving for Atlanta in the storied Marian Hossa swap.

Prognosis: Ride him while he is hot.  A good streaking option for at least five more games.

Daily Fantasy 3 Stars 01/04/2010

01/05/2010
Phoenix Coyotes v Los Angeles Kings

In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO) and thus exclude player’s salaries.

Only two games last night, and four teams in action so not too much to discuss.  Our betting expert Anthony Curatolo did well, going a perfect 2-2 and sticking by his sure bet of the night in a slumping New York Rangers team.   Here are our standout fantasy stars for January 4, 2009:

THIRD STAR: Blake Wheeler, Boston Bruins (0-0-1) –  Wheeler made last night’ s contest interesting with a game-tying goal with four minutes left in regulation time.  Even though his Bruins eventually fell to the the Rangers 3-2, the 23-year-old scored a goal and an assist in over 16 minutes of ice time.  In addition, the former 5th overall pick finished a perfect plus two on the evening while firing two shots on goal.

Keeper Watch: Two Russians & A Finn

12/09/2009
Colorado Avalanche v Florida Panthers

‘Keeper Watch’ will come out every couple of days, noting the changes in value for top prospects who are most likely available in your league. Similarly to our ‘Endorsed Pickups’ I will try not to focus too much on one position, which will leave some noteworthy players off the list.

Their must be something in the water, because there haven’t been a lot of kids making impact this week.  With the NHL getting younger and younger it is important for us to monitor the progress of prospects as well their role as they make the team.  In previous weeks, we had to make several cuts in order to cut it down to five or six.  This week we only can think of three.  Without further adieu, here are the kids we like.

C: Artem Anisimov, New York Rangers – In the preseason this kid looked like the next Russian superstar.  Why exactly this has changed is beyond me.  Did anyone realistically think he was going to have a rookie season similar to Ilya Kovalchuk or Alexander Ovechkin? The 21-year-old is currently on pace for 37 points but I see him capable of 50 points easily.

The New York Rangers essentially have zero secondary scoring.  As coach Tortorella shuffles lines two players remain constants together: Marian Gaborik and Vaclav Prospal.  Shuffling in and out of that line is Christopher Higgins, Brandon Dubinsky and Sean Avery.  With Arty playing with the two, the Rangers defeated a strong Buffalo Sabres team but now Avery finds himself back on the line .

Prognosis: Arty has too much skill not to play on a first line, eventually. Check out his highlight reel moves here.

Goalie Starters & Injury Updates 12/06/2009

12/06/2009
New Jersey Devils v New York Rangers

This thread will be updated all day, so keep refreshing it as the day goes along. Here are your wounded bodies and expected starters for tonight:

  • Henrik Lundqvist expected to start.
  • Same rangers team as last night. Meaning no Brandon Dubinsky, Donald Brashear or Wade Redden and Lundqvist confirmed. [Blue Notes]

Detroit Red Wings

Ottawa Senators

Anaheim Ducks

  • Going by the “you win, you’re in” tactics of coach Randy Carlyle I would expect Jean-Sebastien Giguere to start tonight.
