Similar to our Daily 3 Stars, this section will break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every week and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO) and therefore omit salaries.
THIRD STAR: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks (0-0-1) – Toews receives this honor following his name drawn for Team Canada. In four games last week, the 21-year-old managed a steady five points in four games, with two goals and three assists. The youngest captain in Hawks history also fired 16 shots on goal, added seven penalty minutes and posted a reasonable plus-one rating. Of his five points, two came on the man advantage giving him a slight margin over teammate Patrick Kane for our third star.
SECOND STAR: Jamie Langenbrunner, New Jersey Devils (0-1-0) – The second team captain to make this list, Langenbrunner also received a Team USA invitation this past week. With five goals and one assist over his last four games, the Cloquet, Minnesota native now boasts a four-game point streak. In addition to his torrid pace this gritty leader also took 15 shots. Three of his six points came on the powerplay good enough to make him our second star of the week.
FIRST STAR: Rene Bourque, Calgary Flames (1-0-0) – Despite a drop from Jarome Iginla‘s line, Bourque continues to produce. In his last four games, the 28-year-old posted a steady six points, with only one coming on the man advantage. In addition the veteran boasted a steady plus-five rating, sat 10 minutes in the box and took 18 shots on goal.
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Patrick Kane, Eric Staal, Dustin Byfuglien, Shea Weber, Ryan Shannon
