In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO) and thus exclude player’s salaries.
I forgot to post these last night, so here we go. Big night in hockey with 22 teams and 11 games. Here are our standout fantasy stars for the evening:
THIRD STAR: Andrei Markov, Montreal Canadiens (0-0-1) – Markov continues to put up points following a nasty injury. The 31-year-old defenseman added three assists in the Habs win over Florida. Two of his assists came on the powerplay, while he added two penalty minutes, two shots and a modest plus one. In eight games, Markov produced an impressive 11 points and he currently sports a seven-game point scoring streak. Try to acquire this d-man as there is no one hotter on the blue line at the moment.
SECOND STAR: Eric Christensen, New York Rangers (0-1-0) – The recently turned 26-year-old played primarily with top scorer Marian Gaborik and produced favorable results. With a powerplay goal and even strength assist Christensen posted his first two points of the season, after being help scoreless in his eight previous contests. The Ontario native also fired five shots on goal, sat two minutes and posted a perfect plus one as the Rangers defeated the Hurricanes 2-1.
FIRST STAR: Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks (1-0-0) – Toews posted an almost identical night to Christensen. Instead of a powerplay goal the 21-year-old posted a powerplay assists and one more shot giving him six. Aside from that the stat line remains the same with contributions across six offensive categories good enough for the night’s first star.
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Brian Gionta, Andy McDonald, Alexander Frolov, Loui Eriksson
