In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO) and thus exclude player’s salaries.
Here are our standout fantasy stars for the evening:
THIRD STAR: Todd Bertuzzi, Detroit Red Wings (0-0-1) – With the subtractions of Marian Hossa, Tomas Kopecky and Jiri Hudler over the offseason and pretty much everyone else during the regular season, Bertuzzi finally finds himself in a position to succeed. Playing primarily with Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom works wonders for Big Bert’s confidence as he finally appears back in form. The controversial winger scored a goal and put two assists on the scoresheet even though his team eventually fell to the Stars. The 34-year-old tied his season=high six shots on goal while maintaining a modest plus two rating. Probably would not hurt to give this guy some playing time until the rest of the lineup catches up.
SECOND STAR: Alexander Ovechkin, Washington Capitals (0-1-0) – The Great 8 struck again. This time against a wounded Edmonton Oiler team. In the Capitals 4-2 victory, Ovechkin scored two goals and assisted on one by Nicklas Backstrom. Combine that with a whopping nine shots on goal and a plus one rating and it is easy to see why we chose Alexander the Great as our second star of the evening.
FIRST STAR: Wojtek Wolski, Colorado Avalanche (1-0-1) – It seems like every time the Avs win a game a different player makes this list. Today it is Wolski, the loyal left flank to elite playmaker Paul Stastny. The Polish native native scored two goals, one a powerplay tally that became the game winning goal. The 23-year-old also chipped in two assists, four shots on goal and finished a respectable plus three for the night. Great all around effort and well deserving of our first star.
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Dean McAmmond, Nik Antropov, Matt Cullen, Marcel Goc, Martin Erat, Karlis Skrastins, Pavel Datsyuk
