‘Keeper Watch’ will come out every couple of days, noting the changes in value for top prospects who are most likely available in your league. Similarly to our ‘Endorsed Pickups’ I will try not to focus too much on one position, which will leave some noteworthy players off the list.
D – Jonathan Ericsson / Derek Meech, Detroit Red Wings – Although Brad Stuart is the first to get a start in place of Niklas Kronwall, there has been mention of both of these defensemen getting a chance. Ericsson showed a lot of promise during last season’s playoffs so he certainly is on the radar while the coaching staff feels Meech has some untapped potential.
Prognosis: Watch the situation closely and see how this situation plays itself out.
D – Alexandre Picard, Ottawa Senators – The 24-year-old defenseman is on a tear, scoring five points in the last four games. Seeing healthy time on the Senators second powerplay unit accounts for three of these points. Picard is an excellent post-hype sleeper who plays a solid point.
Prognosis: Grab the kid and stream him while he is hot. If he gets a bump onto the first unit his value should climb.
RW –Troy Brouwer, Chicago Blackhawks – The 24-year-old right wing keeps improving his game at the NHL level. After a modest 26 points last year, the sophomore is looking at a 40 point, 20+ goal season. As we previously mentioned, there are some salary cap complications and Brouwer is young, cheap and can score. Don’t expect him to go anywhere and expect his numbers to improve every year.
Prognosis: If you have room on your team give the kid a chance.
C – Andrei Loktionov, Los Angeles Kings – This talented Russian recently got a callup and will center a line between Alexander Frolov and Dustin Brown. Not too shabby for a kid who saw himself in juniors at this time last year. I don’t expect the kid to be rushed, so no powerplay time yet but it will be interesting to see if he sticks.
Prognosis: Monitor the situation, the 19-year-old has the talent to stick.
LW – Sergei Kostitsyn, Montreal Canadiens – Not a sexy pick but the 22-year-old still is a talented hockey player. His recent call-up comes after reporting to Hamilton and potting 13 points in 16 games. In his first game back the Belarussian added an assist and plus two.
Prognosis: Solid depth move if you need a filler on the left side. It is worth mentioning that two years ago he looked like a solid keeper.
