In this section, I break down the top three fantasy hockey performers every night and cite why I chose them in particular. In addition, I will track the amount of times the players have received this honor and tally them at the end of the season. For the sake of clarity, I will be using Yahoo! standard categories (Forwards – G,A,+/-, PP, PIM, SOG; Goalies – W, GAA, SV%, SHO)
THIRD STAR: Jeff Deslauriers, Edmonton Oilers (0-0-1) – The main beneficiary of the injury of Nikolai Khabibulin, the 25-year-old turned away all 36 shots to shutout the Coyotes. This start comes after giving up nine goals in his last two games so maybe the kid is turning things around. Monitor the status of the wounded Russian since history indicates Deslauriers should get some more time in net.
SECOND STAR: Daniel Briere, Philadelphia Flyers (0-1-0) – The veteran turned in an excellent effort last night potting two goals and chipping in two assists, one of which coming on the powerplay. The Quebec native added four shots and two penalty minutes to his line giving him respectable stats across five offensive categories. Briere now has 16 points in 17 games a respectable tally for any teams #2 right wing.
FIRST STAR: Jared Boll, Columbus Blue Jackets (1-0-0) -If you tuned into last night’s slug fest at Madison Square Garden then you can see why the 23-year-old winger is our number one star. Boll scored a goal, assisted on one and got in two fights! Known for dropping the gloves the right wing added a shot and finished the evening a plus three. Contributing in more than one category for a change, it would be interesting to see if he has more offensive potential to add.
HONORABLE MENTION(S): Marty Turco, Nathan Horton, Marian Gaborik, Martin Erat
